How Would You Like To Play Golf With Tiger Woods?

By Wycliffe Williams

I generally go to sleep, yawn, get restless, surf TV channels and do all sorts of other stuff when golf is on. Quite frankly, golf absolutely bores me. If you are a gamer though, things are quite different.

The Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 on Playstation 3 is a very exciting game to play. This particular series is going to be a blast. Right from the beginning you will be amazed at the performance of the game. It loads in a few seconds.

When the loading is done you are given many different options to choose from. The most noticeable option is that of Career Mode. In this mode you can create your own custom golfer.

Some of the other modes include: match play, alternate shot, battle golf, best ball, stroke play, skins, practice and many more. Each type of game has its own rules, but there is still something there for everyone.

One of the best matches to play is Battle Golf. It is basically match play with an entertaining twist. During this match you will play a normal golf game. But after every hole the winner gets a special treat.

That treat is the removal of an opponents golf club. That means any club in their set can be removed. It’s a great feeling when your opponent has only a few clubs at his disposal while you still have all of yours.

Creating and developing your own unique golfer is one of the highlights of the game. You get to design them to look like whatever you want. You are free to design your golfer right down to the very last detail.

You can also choose the type of reactions they have on the course. If all you got to do was design a character and just look at that character, the game would quickly lose its appeal. Luckily, theres much more to do with your created character than just looking at him/her, and the best thing to do is to start a career.

Career mode allows you to take your character through many different tournaments and matches. You will face off with some of golfs well known names, such as Tiger Woods, John Daly, Justin Leonard, Mike Weir, Jim Furyk, and many more.

In order to compete with these pro golfers and become the best, you will have to create one heck of a great golfer. However, creating a superstar golfer is not that simple.

After all, Tiger Woods did not become a great golfer over night. But thats beside the point. The point is you will need plenty of training and practice to reach your peak as a golfer. You do that by taking your character through a few different mini games. They will develop your character's individual attributes.

These are your characters different attributes: ball striking, driving accuracy, putting, recovery, power, power boost, approach, and spin. After each mini-game some of those attributes may increase. However, that will depend on your overall performance during the game, as well as what the mini-game's main focus was on. Your starting character is going to suck. But with a few mini games under his belt the character will grow in talent and become a star golfer in no time.

Learning from Tiger Woods

By Robert Rickover

The August 14, 2000 issue of Time Magazine features an article about Tiger Woods titled “The Game of Risk - How the Best Golfer in the World Got Even Better”. Although I have no specific interest in the sport of golf, I do have a long-standing fascination with the general theme of the article: how can someone learn to do something better?

That’s precisely what the Alexander Technique is all about. And while Tiger Woods has probably never heard of it, it’s interesting that his quest for a better golf swing parallels in many ways the process F. Matthias Alexander - the developer of the Alexander Technique - went through a century ago.

Alexander was a Shakespearean reciter who ran up against limitations in his ability to perform well on stage. At that time there were no microphones and speakers and so he had to fill an entire auditorium with just the power of his own voice. Like Woods he was very talented at his profession but he also knew that there was room for improvement. In particular, he found that his voice gave out during a longer performance and that he had a tendency to gasp for breath on occasion.

Neither his doctors nor his vocal coaches were able to help and so he set off on his own, using a system of mirrors to monitor his performance in order to see precisely what was causing his difficulties. If he were living today, he would probably use videotapes of himself to see what was going on.

That’s what Tiger Woods did in order to improve his swing. “I knew I wasn’t in the greatest positions in my swing at the Masters,” Woods said. “But my timing was great, so I got away with it. And I made almost every putt. You can have a wonderful week like that even when your swing isn’t sound. But can you still contend in tournaments with that swing when your timing isn’t good? Will it hold up over a long period of time? The answer to those questions, with the swing I had, was no. And I wanted to change that.”

The article notes that Woods has become “...an obsessive student of the game who reviews videotapes of old tournaments for clues about how to play each hole.” Alexander too was an obsessive student of his performance and in the end his obsession paid off not only in providing a solution to his voice problem, but later in the discovery of a process that could be taught to others who wanted to improve the quality of their physical functioning.

“What is most remarkable about Woods,” the article continues, “is his restless drive for what the Japanese call kaizen, or continuous improvement. Toyota engineers will push a perfectly good assembly line until it breaks down. They’ll find and fix the flaw and push the system again. That’s kaizen. That’s Tiger.”

And that’s Alexander, too. Never content with the progress he had already made - first in solving his own voice problem and later in developing better ways to teach others, and to train teachers in his Technique.

Wood’s first instructor, Rudy Duran, commented that he has “the ability to stay in the present during a tournament and focus on hitting one shot at a time.”

Alexander, too, discovered that in order to change his way of speaking he had to learn to stay focused on what he was thinking and doing in the present. Much of what Alexander Technique teachers do to help their students with today is teach them how to develop this skill for themselves.

It’s no wonder that so many leading performers in the fields of acting, music, and dance have studied the Alexander Technique and have publicly endorsed it. It turns out that this ability is also very useful for people who don’t consider themselves to be performers but whose “performance” of activities in their daily lives has put harmful stress on their bodies, often to the point of causing pain such as backache or stiff shoulders and necks.

Learning how to monitor your thoughts and actions in real time is a valuable skill for anyone to master.

Robert Rickover is a teacher of the Alexander Technique living in Lincoln, Nebraska. He also teaches regularly in Toronto, Canada. Robert is the author of Fitness Without Stress - A Guide to the Alexander Technique and is the creator of The Complete Guide to the Alexander Technique at http://www.alexandertechnique.com.

Tiger Woods Enters Sadr City Golf Classic

By Karen Fish

The Associated Press announced today that Tiger Woods has handed in his entry for the inaugural Sadr City Golf Classic to be held Feb. 8 to Feb. 11 at the newly designed Jack Nicklaus Bushwood County Club on the outskirts of Baghdad, Iraq. The Sadr City Golf Classic is being held the week after the Dubai Desert Classic, a favorite stop on the European Tour. Past champions include a whose who of golfing legends including Seve Ballesteros, Ernie Els, Fred Couples, Marvin Himelfarb, Colin Montgomerie, Jose Maria Olazabal, Thomas Bjorn, two time champion Ernie Els, Mark O’Meara and the defending champion Tiger Woods.

Sadr City is a suburb of Baghdad with 2 million people which was built in response to the intense housing shortage in Baghdad in 1959. It was originally called Revolution City after the Beatles song “Revolution” then the name was changed to Saddam City. After Sunni Saddam’s statue was toppled in 2003 the Shiite neighborhood was renamed Sadr City after the Ayatollah Mohammed Sadeq al-Sadr, the grandfather of its present ruler Muqtada al-Sadr. Tiger’s move has caused quite a stir in golfing circles as it will cause Tiger to forego the 2007 Pebble Beach National Pro Am. At the time of his beheading Daniel Pearl had been investigating a story that Iranian President Ahmidinejad had guaranteed Tiger a $50 million appearance fee to play in the Sadr City which many Shiite Muslim Clerics believe will be a part of Shiite Iran by then. It was also revealed that Michael Richards and Jack Nicklaus were instrumental in arranging for Tiger to play the Muqtada Open.

The event will be governed by the rules of the R&A Golf Association however several local rules will be in effect. In the event of a gasoline powered golf cart exploding a player’s caddie into the next dimension the player will be allowed to change caddies instantly no penalty. Should the Lord Jesus Christ the Jewish born Rabbi and the awaited Messiah of Christianity and Islam suddenly Rapture every born again Christian during a player’s backswing thereby interfering with the player’s swing the player will be allowed a mulligan. This will be the first time in the history of the PGA Tour that mulligans will be allowed. The PGA went along with it in the interest of avoiding another Casey Martin situation heading to the United States Supreme Court. The final nail in the coffin was when the Democrats took over the American Congress and President Bush thereby lost the power to insert another Televangelist as the swing voter on the court.

Asked why he was playing in the event Tiger had this to say: “I am a Buddhist. I try to meditate on the course and stay in the zone. I felt that if I could stay focused while all Hell was breaking loose then I would be able to remain focused under the most intense conditions. I also have the assurances of the Sultan of Dubai, (Butch was instrumental in arranging this), President al-Maliki, President Ahmidinejad, President Assad, and the Saudi Royal family that during the week of the tournament all violence in the Middle East will come to an absolute halt. Elin and my mom have never been to Iraq and I hear that the food there is great. In the old days the USO was able to arrange for Marilyn Monroe, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Joey Heatherton and so many others to fly into war zones to boost the morale of the troops. Imagine the fairways at Bushwood lined with thousands of our brave American men and women soldiers who are giving their lives and limbs every day to protect our way of life being beamed world wide by satellites to the rest of the world. I can’t wait to go. Martyrdom did not seem to harm Jesus’ popularity, especially when it comes out that Elin had a bun in the oven at the time. I will become bigger than John Lennon, who released a new Beatles Album “Love” this week, decades after his assassination. Had he lived to old age, who would have bought it? He probably would have turned out worse than Sir Paul McCartney, accused by Yoko Ono of clubbing her over the head with her prosthetic leg in a public and messy divorce. Who needs the tsouris?”

Tiger Woods Prepares To Tackle Winged Foot For 2006 US Open

By Mark Barnes

Since his third place finish at the Augusta National in the Masters on April 9th, Tiger Woods has not played. Since the passing of Tigers father Earl Woods, things have been more of a reality check for the PGA's Megastar. Tiger Woods does, however, intend on playing at the US Open between the 15th-18th of June.

Tuesday Tiger Woods was just outside Little Rock, at the Alotian Club where he made his first appearance that was related to golf. Woods was giving to his younger fan base, as there was a clinic for the Inaugural Jackson T. Stephens Charitable Golf Tournament. Children from the Stephens supported charities watched and listened to this golf, great as he offered advice to young golfers on the mechanics of swings.

Tiger did play a round of golf in N.Y. at the famous Winged Foot Course located in Mamaroneck, N.Y., which is a very good indication that he intends on attending the late June event. Tiger definitely feels that his game needs work, and this is as good a place as any to start the process, of rebuilding his confidence.

Tiger knows as well as anyone, you must drive well at the US OPEN, there is no margin for error, and the roster of contestants is tough. Taking time off for the mourning of his father on the third of May 2006, gave Tiger Woods some rust, he knows it and plans on fixing it. Not only does he need work on his driving, his irons are in need of a serious distance check as well. All part of his master plan, we can be sure of this. Look forward to seeing Tiger on the course, and making the crowd happy.

Why Tiger Woods' Golf Swing Technique Is So Effective

By Mike Pedersen

Golf sensation Tiger Woods’ golf swing technique has been the subject of many interesting studies.

One thing that has come out very clearly from this leading golfer’s style and his golf swing technique is his amazing flexibility and high fitness level which have contribute tremendously to his golf career. A career that has seen him crowned in the minds of many as the undisputed greatest golfer in the history of the sport.

The Tiger Woods golf swing technique sees Wood utilizing his flexibility at the back of his swing to comfortably reach far back.

As he begins his swing, his level of fitness and muscle strength enables him to build up club head velocity by turning his torso quickly and pressing his right leg forward. There is minimal waste of energy as he maintains his position above the golf ball.

Driving through, Woods uses his hips, shoulders and wrists to concentrate his force and create a high initial ball speed. Research has shown that within a few feet off the tee, the ball is usually traveling at about 180 miles per hour. The average tour pro usually manages only 160 miles per hour.

If you have carefully watched woods and his golf swing technique, you will note that he usually allows the club head’s momentum to extend his follow-through far around his back, thus completing a long and smooth club-head rotation.

Tiger Woods golf swing technique cannot possibly be achieved by somebody who is not physically fit or somebody who does not work out regularly. In fact achieving an effective golf swing technique these days requires conditioned muscles that will enable you to perform consistently and at your best.

Gone are the days when golf was viewed as a leisure sport where players would move around the course in electric golf cars to avoid breaking into a sweat of any kind.

This is not to say that a good golf swing technique calls for rigorous golf strength exercising and golf stretching. Actually, most of the critical golf-specific exercises involve stretches. There is also the lifting of light weights to build specifically on strength rather than muscle.

Clearly golf-specific exercises are the only way to develop good golf swing technique.
